Carmen High School plays Mussel Madness

February 18, 2019

The Milwaukee nonprofit Harbor District, Inc.'s Lindsay Frost worked with teacher Morgan Hanbury to share Mussel Madness with Carmen High School students in January 2019.

Using elements from the curriculum companion, Ms. Hanbury's class observed and recorded how game variables changed in relation to each other as they played. They noted the rise and fall of Fish Buck and Phyto(plankton) stocks over time and in relation to the invasion of Mussels.

This activity shows one way the game directly supports standards-aligned curricular activities (even though the more important thing is that it's a fun way to experience aquatic food web dynamics and disturbance...).

Frost reports that students really loved the game.
